Powered cultivators and tillers were, not very long ago, something for the farmer, but not for the gardener. That has all changed with the increased mechanization of gardening implements, tools and equipment over the last thirty years or so. Better designs and technical advances have brought the hard working hobby gardener some light relief, should they want it. The lightweight garden cultivator is now very much part of the gardening scene.

For a small garden, it is quite difficult to justify buying gas or electric garden cultivators and tillers. Only if you are short of time, or for health reasons short of energy, can you sensibly justify mechanizing the tilling and cultivation of a tiny yard or garden. Once it gets into the realms of an average size or large garden, with flower beds and vegetable garden, then there’s no argument; having a power driven garden tiller cultivator can be a great asset. It can even mean that a keen gardener can take on a larger garden for the same amount of work.

What sort of garden cultivators are available in the stores? Well, for a start you can still get the manual type if are not interested electric garden cultivators or those driven by gas. There are many designs of small hand tools with tines designed for weeding, aerating, row cultivating. Some with long handles can be used standing up, others are for use crouching down or kneeling. We all have our favorite hand tools for the garden, so just choose what looks right for you. You can always improvise a bit with hand tools, using say a small hand fork or trowel for many purposes on a small lot.

For those strapped for time and with plenty of soil that needs regular cultivation, electric garden cultivators and tiller cultivators driven by gas are probably the best choice. Power garden tillers are now so lightweight they are easy to use. The Mantis 4-cycle gas-powered tiller (pictured above) is a premium, but still affordable and good value, example. In fact, Mantis also have an electric garden cultivator plus a 2-cycle gas tiller cultivator.
